Theo Black Drops Brooding EP ‘Turned Around’

‘Turned Around’ marks a new milestone for Miami-based creative Theo Black. It’s a purposeful record drenched in alternative allure.

The keen reader might remember Theo Black from an article we published earlier this year, celebrating ‘Follow The Money’ as “steeped in melancholic and prophetic storytelling”. We stand by our words; in fact, that very same sentence could be used to summarise Black’s entire artistry, at least in its current iteration. ‘Turned Around’ confirms it all, a four-track EP that marks a new milestone for the Miami-based creative. Written during a road trip from his home city to Los Angeles, the record expands on Theo’s eclectic indie rock and dark wave influences.

‘Follow The Money’ introduces the EP like an old friend, taking us by the hand as we initiate what’s about to be a brooding, vibrant aural journey. ‘Plans’ finds a worthy refuge in post-punk and darkwave territories, with Black’s vocals drenched in wholesome fuzziness and leftfield flair. ‘Your Love’ just so happened to veer back towards indie rock charisma, only to then double down in the closer ‘Early Mourning’.

From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Turned Around’ employs a near-cinematic character, with meaningful and observant storytelling being unveiled by Theo Black’s genius mind. Every song narrates a specific story, always hiding a more comprehensive and purposeful reflection. From societal greed in ‘Follow The Money’, to personal ambition in ‘Plans’, passing through romantic pains in ‘Your Love’ and an invitation to stay in the present in ‘Early Mourning’. As we are told, “the music speaks to inner turmoil and unrest and finding the path to make it through.”
