zekiizo returns with bold, fuzzy alt-pop cut ‘SHOTGUN’

Marking zekiizo’s latest effort, ‘SHOTGUN’ doubles down on the constant tension between the popular and the leftfield, a sonic and lyrical contrast that’s brooding and fierce.

The keen reader might remember zekiizo from a feature we published just over a year ago, celebrating ‘kiss’ as a “record that is relatable and digestible, while pushing the sonic envelope forward.” We stand by words; in fact, such a statement could very well summarise the nuanced artistry behind the American artist. ‘SHOTGUN’ further advances such a concept, catapulting zekiizo to the forefront of the modern pop landscape.

A worthy follow-up to ‘Ricochet’, ‘SHOTGUN’ embraces malleable melodism and conventional song-form, only to then wrap it all into bold lo-fi electronica and alt-pop allure. Constantly fuzzy and feverish, the new single reveals the profound dualism that underpins the talented Boston-based sonic alchemist, a constant tension between the popular and the leftfield. The reflective nature of the project’s songwriting largely aligns with the brooding aural matter.

Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the song, zekiizo explains: “SHOTGUN is an uptempo dance song about being enamoured by a new interest. It talks about being pulled in by something kind of chaotic, but relishing in the excitement. Think Bonnie and Clyde, maybe. Haha. It’s supposed to make you want to stand up and dance! Being enamoured is really a powerful feeling.” We appreciate the highly introspective charge that every new zekiizo’s record brings to the table, further evidence of the project’s observant, brooding lyricism.
