This is a rather crucial year for British outfit Sutlej. Having debuted back in February with ‘Let Me Out’, the London-based alt-rock trio seems eager to carve out a space of their own, doing so with a peculiar guitar-coded formula, one that feels euphoric and melancholic, as well as evocative and pensive. It’s the perfect match between emotional chaos and gritty distortions, a piece that finds a fine balance between gloomy rock energy and lyrical introspection.
‘Tell Me You Care’ marks Sutlej’s sophomore single, a release that confirms what the UK music press had already understood: the group is here to stay, and they have the class to make it at the highest level. In that sense, the new track is especially relevant, as it enjoys a slow-burn character, starting intimate and brooding, then exploding into bold alt-rock charisma and catchy riffs. Lewis Maddison, George Power and George Butcher do a great job on it.
Delving deeper into the lyrical ethos that propels the record, we are told: “It explores themes of frustration, personal freedom and trying to find clarity when everything feels boxed in.” We suspect folks will relate to it; it sort of embodies the classic ‘arena anthem’, a song one can sing out loud and find personal catharsis in it. Overall, we are highly positive about Sutlej’s future: judging by what we have heard so far, it won’t be long till they gain national attention. More singles are on their way!
