We are not going to lie, ‘Contortionist’ has conquered us completely. It oozes celestial melancholia and hypnotic gloom, the sort of record that threads the fine line between obscure shoegaze territories and more spacious, hazier tones. It develops with a ballad-like ethos, luscious female vocal providing a fitting counterpoint to the reverbed guitars. The track is Twinsize’s best offering to date, which is not a particularly meaningful statement given that the Leeds-based outfit has only two singles out at the moment.
Yet, if this is only the beginning, the band has already won. ‘Contortionist’ is absolutely sublime and flawless, a piece that toys with silence and pauses, something that takes compositional maturity and artistic restraint. No wonder Monomyth Records signed them: Twinsize are an incredibly promising project, one that we are grateful to have discovered.
From a lyrical standpoint, the record embraces heightened introspection and emotional vulnerability in a way that is quite unique to Twinsize. ‘Contortionists’ resonates as a triumphant, cathartic release, especially during its striking and explosive outro. As the British group explains: “It is all about bending over backwards for someone who wouldn’t reciprocate. It’s a melancholic ballad about desperation and heartache and how it manifests physically as well as emotionally. A piece of our hearts has been interwoven within this song, and we hope that it can poke its way into yours.” It sure did folks, it sure did.
