The Night and the Dirty Share Broding Rock Opal ‘My Hurt’

‘My Hurt’ feels cinematic in its most oblique sense. Packed with dark and brooding imagery, the song draws inspiration from one of the most painful events in US history.

A glance at The Night and the Dirty’s Instagram profile reveals a short feed of synths and cats, a sign that the project enjoys a great deal of unconventional artistry. Hailing from Seattle, the group includes Vocalist Kelly McShane, Guitarist Jeremiah Robinson, and Keyboardist Michael Waller, all forming a collaborative imprint that has delivered purposeful musical gems such as ‘My Hurt’. Released back in December, the song is still very relevant, and the perfect example of the Night and the Dirty’s artsy rock approach.

In a way, ‘My Hurt’ feels cinematic in its most oblique sense. Introduced by folk and Americana guitars, the track slowly blooms into a brooding and gloomy anthem, with McShane’s melancholic and hazy vocals never towering over the noisy and mysterious instrumental. It’s the perfect balance of authentic songwriting and leftfield arrangements.

Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that drives ‘My Hurt’ forward, the group explains: “The album cover has an angular red and white motif, reminiscent of the Japanese battle flag in a burned, faded and disarrayed condition. The song was released on December 7th, the anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour in World War 2.” We appreciate how the song has real-world consequences, drawing inspiration from history and helping listeners draw a parallel with the current fragile global landscape.
