Aptly titled, ‘Not Playin’ is a highly relatable and kinetic record, a slice of unapologetic and hard-hitting D&B delivered by Cardiff-based producer and creative CajunBeatz. In it, we appreciate the apparent aural dualism, a functional contrast of intents. On one side, we have explosive electronic groove, electrifying and potent. On the other side, we find evocative female vocals, adding a nice melodic twist to an otherwise gritty record.
Taken from CajunBeatz’s first dedicated D&B album ‘Drum and Bass In Your Face’, ‘Not Playin’ could very well be taken as a declaration of intent, a manifesto of what the entire project stands for. This is not material that needs to be analysed or reflected upon. This is club-oriented music, stuff that holds an eager dance-oriented charge. ‘Not Playin’ needs to be felt, more than understood, a difference that’s rather crucial to the overall listening experience.
Delving deeper into the authentic and honest ethos that guides ‘Not Playin’, CajunBeatz explains: “The tune reflects both commitment to the musical craft, but also speaks to the feeling of committing to a new love and the experience and emotion of going all in on someone new, even when the future feels uncertain…”
