Apple Eyes Return with Bold New Single ‘Freaking Out’

Reaffirming their aural unpredictability and eclectic musical genius, Apple Eyes return with an intense new single, ‘Freaking Out’.

Apple Eyes’ story is rather unique and meaningful. Back in the early 2010s, the group was making waves across the UK indie landscape, conquering the attention of crucial tastemakers such as Tom Robinson and BBC Radio 6, among others. Their upward trajectory was going fiercely upwards, until tragedy struck and the project lost their best friend and bandmate Edd. Given such a heavy and profound loss, the remaining Apple Eyes members, Claire Hadidjenar and Matthew Walker, decided to shift into a permanent hiatus.

Time heals, some say. In 2024, Claire and Matthew rediscovered a bunch of old demos and found the motivation to start releasing music again. Fast forward to today, and we are happy to present ‘Freaking Out’, Apple Eyes’ latest effort. Released on April 16th, the piece follows up from previous single ‘Playground Love’, marking a pivotal year in the group’s history. The world around them might have changed, but Apple Eyes’ boundless talent is always the same: embracing a heightened eclectic outlook over indie pop and guitar-coded influences. ‘Freaking Out’ illustrates that perfectly, veering outside the electronic, playful indie field into intense indie rock territories.

It’s here that we can fully grasp the musical genius that was once hailed so triumphantly by Tom Robinson; Apple Eyes’ arrangements are hard to predict, they are vibrant and lively, truly delving into a cross-genre bonanza. The main hook in ‘Freaking Out’ is euphoric and raw, perfectly resembling its lyrical character. That said, an orchestral violin enjoys a solo towards the end of the song: a further sign of Apple Eyes’ joyful unpredictability.
