Signal-23 Unveil Brand New Leftfield EP ‘Pillars’

‘Pillars’ EP is a sublime descent into escapism, a cathartic, abstract aural cluster that transports listeners into an alternative universe. Meet Signal-23.

From a music outlet called Mesmerized, one would expect the utmost excitement when covering anything ambient, leftfield, and hypnotic. That’s exactly what you are gonna get: ‘Pillars’ EP is a sublime descent into escapism, a cathartic, abstract aural cluster that transports listeners into an alternative universe. It constantly oscillates between heavenly and gloominess, making for a sonic experience that’s rewarding and soothing, never obvious. Packed with five like-minded pieces, ‘Pillars’ slowly uncovers everything that Signal-23 have to offer.

Experimental artistry at its best. Descending into the dark corners of electronica but not shying away from brighter kinetic sections, the American duo navigates the depths of computer music, from mangled, cinematic soundscapes to more conventional and evocative beat-powered compositions. Hailing from San Diego and New York, the American duo enjoys a keen bi-coastal identity, a clash of cultural references and lifestyle that likely makes its way through their artistic output.

Delving deeper into the creative process that propels their sonic research, Signal-23 explain: “The EP was shaped using modular and standalone synthesisers, drum machines, samplers, and vintage signal generators and tape machines, all feeding into an Ableton-based production workflow. The project’s origin story traces back to a reverb-drenched chord progression played on a modified Omnichord.” That specific Omichord moment will then go on to become the record’s closing episode, ‘Pillars (Ambient)’, a larger-than-life, hazy slice of escapism.
