The Yum Yum Tree Return After Long Hiatus with New Album ‘Turn Down The Noise’

The group’s first album since their 2007 release ‘Paint By Numbers’, ‘Turn Down The Noise’ showcases Ther Yum Yum Tree’s renewed songwriting honesty and 90s-coded gritty guitar sounds.

Weirdly, recently, there’s been a rise in bands coming out of long hiatuses. We appreciate it when that happens; it’s particularly meaningful to reconnect with music later in life, plus it’s interesting to hear people’s perspectives on why and how they arrived at the decision of recording new material. In the case of Atlanta-based trio The Yum Yum Tree, such a decision stems, among other things, from Andy Gish’s newfound songwriting honesty. The group’s bassist and lead singer, she’s adamant about the new perspective she has gained on life and relationships, almost twenty years on since the project’s 2007 album, ‘Paint By Numbers’.

That’s what allowed her to write authentic, wholesome songs, material that feels rooted in personal experience, but also incredibly relatable. ‘Turn Down The Noise’ is the result of such a process, marking the new album by The Yum Yum Tree. In it, we are confronted with the kind of 90s grittiness that we had perhaps long forgotten. Packing ten episodes, the record feels libertine and laidback, but also fuzzy and bold. The American group truly delves into their noisier personality, yet keeps their casual melodism at the forefront of it all, thanks to Gish’s hypnotic, fierce vocals.

Doubling down on her renewed songwriting flair, Andy explains: “We create so much doubt in ourselves … by the time I got to the point where I thought, ‘Yes, this is worth recording’, a lot of work had gone into the songs. I’m a very different person. I probably wouldn’t have written those songs in 2010; I wouldn’t have had the same perspective.” Matt Harr on drums and John McNicholas on guitar complete the talented trio.
