The keen reader might remember British producer and creative See How from a feature we published last summer, praising ‘422ppm’ as an “evocative UK garage heater, steeped in atmospheric tones and a meaningful outlook”. Well, it turns out that’s all become a sort of personal brand for the London-based artist. You see, while he’s a truly gifted and peculiar aural explorer, See How particularly enjoys blending art and activism, often with a sprinkling of spirituality in it, for good measure. It’s fair to say that there’s a clear purpose behind the project.
‘My Religion’ confirms such an ethos. Marking See How’s latest release, the track jumps into glitchy, hypnotic electronica, a blend of breakbeat and jungle grooves crowned by mangled and sampled famous quotes on peace, freedom and self-belief. A plethora of minimalistic, yet intricate synth lines add to the nocturne and experimental character that propels the piece. The listening experience is quite euphoric, but also drenched in escapism and kinetic energy.
Delving deeper into the new single, See How explains: “I wanted ‘My Religion’ to feel almost like a manifesto; a set of beliefs about how to move through the world. Although the meaning is personal, the lyrics are by others whose words have carried weight across generations. Each line comes from a different voice, but together they form a single idea about kindness, peace and living honestly.” We love how, even amid the project’s leftfield allure, we still find a great deal of meaningful imagery.
