BUNNIES Return with Brooding, Intense Cut ‘Homunculus’

BUNNIES sound unlike anything else, a blend of brooding art-rock and gritty alternative allure. We appreciate their sonic eccentricity and chaotic mannerisms.

We approach ‘Homunculus’ with a certain reverence and curiosity. You see, this is the first time we come across BUNNIES, a band that sounds unlike anything else, a blend of brooding art-rock and gritty alternative allure. Comprised of Jeremy Macomber-Dubs (vocals/guitar), Jack Science (vocals/synth), Matthew Newman (vocals/drums), and Rebecca ‘Becca’ Macomber-Dubs (vocals/bass/trumpet), the Western Massachusetts-based outfit has recently unveiled their latest EP, a horror-coded aural exploration aptly titled ‘Horror Spectrum’.

In it, the keen listeners will be able to reckon with BUNNIES’ sonic eccentricity, as well as with their seemingly chaotic outlook, often stemming from bold, roaring drums, peculiar and striking vocals, and a deep sense of drama and theatrics. It’s good to meet a band that doesn’t follow trends or a popular formula. Instead, BUNNIES are knee-deep into the unbeaten path, building a highly personal artistic character that feels disorienting at first, yet it then reveals satisfactory escapism.

In that sense, ‘Homunculus’ fits the brief rather perfectly. The recipient of a gloomy music video, the track dives deep into modern-day morality, corruption, and depravity, while also including reports of a real-life ‘Homunculus,’ a man in Connecticut recently discovered to have been held captive for over 20 years. Directed by Piper Preston, the video “forces viewers to not just sit with, but to dissect the implications of its wicked metaphor.” In true BUNNIES style, the record feels challenging and intense, but also rewarding and meaningful.
