The keen reader might remember Margate-based troubadour and visionary Jack Goldstein from a feature we published last summer, praising his latest album ‘HELLFIRE BUMPER STICKER COWPUNCHING JEWBOY’ as a “cathartic fever dream, one that feels hazy and hypnotising, but also hard-hitting and memorable”. We stand behind our words: Goldstein’s artistic output enjoys a great deal of whimsical allure, a quality that takes the project through a series of eclectic influences, and that ultimately helps steer Jack’s thematic, encompassing storytelling.
Anyway, the past is the past. Goldstein knows that, too, and he’s not resting on his laurels. Instead, the talented musician is celebrating today’s Bandcamp Friday in the best way possible: releasing a brand new track that’s available exclusively on Bandcamp. ‘⁺‧₊˚ ཐི⋆falling off the earth⋆ཋྀ ˚₊‧⁺’ sounds exactly like its title looks. Expansive, liberating, and incredibly peculiar. True to Goldstein’s hyper-country branding, the record oscillates between anthemic psychedelia and electrifying Americana flair. Catchy and hypnotic, the single hides meaningful lyricism behind a playful and choral façade, with precious production effects helping give the overall record a futuristic aura.
Aptly titled, ‘⁺‧₊˚ ཐི⋆falling off the earth⋆ཋྀ ˚₊‧⁺’ explores themes of existential and physical erasure, using specific references and imagery to then build a large lyrical canvas, one that will resonate with a variety of audiences in different ways. Delving deeper into the song, Goldstein explains: “I guess it’s a song about erasure, or the broader threat of erasure. I wrote it after reading about the farming crisis in America in the eighties. My sister used to live on and run a small family farm, and I used to go visit her when I was a kid.”
