The Burton D’Agostini Procedure Delve into Hypnotic Territories with ‘Do You Feel Alright’

Dark and hypnotic, ‘Do You Feel Alright’ resonates as a quirky aural fever dream.

Sometimes, artistic partnerships are made to last forever. In the case of the American duo The Burton D’Agostini Procedure, such a marriage of musical intent has lasted for decades, as they started playing together in college. The two American talents haven’t lost their passion for music-making yet, enjoying a great deal of nostalgic allure and eclectic character. Spanning psych-rock and modern rock influences, Jeff Burton and John D’Agostini continue to write new material rather fiercely. We wouldn’t expect anything less from such dedicated individuals.

With Burton taking care of vocals, bass, keyboards, drums, and guitar, and D’Agostini indulging in guitars, drums, and post-production wizardry, as they playfully call it, the Grand Rapids-based pair are adamant about using real instruments on their record, an ethos that’s particularly relevant in this day and age. We saw that recently, when we wrote about ‘Before And After Three’, a piece we triumphantly described as “a slice of gloomy and cosmic indie-rock goodness”. We see the same today, approaching ‘Do You Feel Alright’ with renewed curiosity.

Compared to the previous single, ‘Do You Feel Alright’ takes up a gloomier, darker façade, exchanging whimsical psychedelia for icy post-rock tones and a melancholic, hypnotic delivery. The dynamics don’t really change throughout the piece, a factor that introduces a sort of ‘fever-dream’ quality to the listening experience. Burton’s vocals are quite charming and prophetic, but also gritty and psychedelic.

‘Do You Feel Alright’ is taken from The Burton D’Agostini Procedure’s latest album ‘As Clowns Drift By’.
