‘City of Wind’ presents itself like a puzzle that needs to be solved. It’s a foundational release for Cling Film, the first in a series of intricate indie-rock nuggets with heightened lyrical meaning. From a sonic standpoint, the track speaks volumes about the expert musicianship enjoyed by the Glasgow-based creative, here sporting alternative guitar tunings, time signature changes, and an eclectic character that nods to Midwestemo influences and general math-rock goodness. From a lyrical one, ‘City of Wind’ echoes the record’s quirky allure with heartfelt, nostalgic songwriting, a reflection of Cling Film’s long-standing search for a place to call home.
Active between the UK and Italy, Cling Film is not running her first rodeo. In fact, she’s been militating in various bands, as well as driving another solo project under the moniker Marylin Mezzo. Currently, Cling Film is also part of Liverpool-based outfit ‘Hinged’. We appreciate such a powerful commitment to the musical medium. No matter where she is, whether in Glasgow, Liverpool, or Italy, the talented musician and songwriter constantly feels a heightened need for self-expression. It’s her raison d’être, one could confidently say.
Delving deeper into ‘City of Wind’, Cling Film explains: “It aims to express a kind of inner conflict, a love-hate relationship with something one must adapt to. This ‘City’ can be interpreted in many ways: a real place, a part of oneself, negative emotions, or even the relationship with musical inspiration.” Alongside the audio track, ‘City of Wind’ also ships with a DIY music video, featuring video-game style visuals and adventurous storytelling.
