December 2025 marked the return of Australian creative and performer Banquet Darling, back from a five-year hiatus with the kinetic, playful cut ‘The Gateway’. Compared to the project’s previous endeavours, the new single seemed to focus more on soulful influences and dance-oriented grooves, even sporting hints of cosmic disco and funk allure. That wasn’t a singular episode: ‘Dynamite Daddy’ doubles down on the same premise by venturing into a grandiose, bombastic and diverse arrangement that’s ever so unapologetic and gritty.
Out today, ‘Dynamite Daddy’ enjoys a heightened attention on punk-leaning guitar distortion and joyful cowbells, building a timeless, euphoric aural formula that’s as relevant today as it was back in the 90s. It certainly practices strategic nostalgia, but it doesn’t overdo it. Instead, we get Banquet Darling’s fierce vocals serving up a healthy amount of theatrical aura and dramatic flair, all features that are central to the project’s peculiar identity. Based in Muloobinba/Newcastle, New South Wales, Kilby spent years travelling the world as an acrobat, musician and director.
Such a longstanding experience shines through ‘Dynamite Daddy’, a colourful single that hides darker, riskier lyricism. Fitting the overall sonic brief, the song finds a worthy refuge in boundary-pushing, sensual imagery and even occult references, as displayed in the track’s music video. As Todd explains: “I write, record, play 98% of the record as well as direct the music videos.”
