Valiancy Returns with Eerie, Brooding Cut ‘Voices’

Despite its outward haunting livery, ‘Voices’ is a deeply authentic and compassionate piece, a heartfelt journey through mental health and depression.

Marking Valiancy’s comeback single after a four-year hiatus, ‘Voices’ reintroduces the project to a global audience. The break served Valiancy well, as he returns with improved production flair and deeply meaningful, hypnotic lyricism. Hailing from Lehi, US, the talented musician and songwriter is otherwise known as Kyle Harris, a creative figure who has no doubt been busy writing and recording new material. We suspect there’s a lot more coming later this year… For now, though, let’s take a closer look at ‘Voices’.

Spearheaded by haunting synth textures and a keen cinematic allure, the single builds with urgency and intensity, yet slowly, continually supercharging its gloomy, brooding character. Before you know it, ‘Voices’ blooms into a striking slice of synth-pop elegance, one that’s partly nostalgic and partly futuristic. In fact, Valiancy mentions Peter Gabriel and James Blake as some of his strongest influences. Aside from the record’s strong aural profile, ‘Voices’ particularly shines through its nuanced songwriting, delving into mental health and the so-called silent killer: depression.

As Harris explains, “This song is about fighting the negative self-talk and the voices in our heads. It deals with suicidal thoughts and tendencies. It is a dark and emotional song.” It truly is, especially in the way it blends haunting, eerie feels with massive production and alternative beats. Valiancy’s vocals are surprisingly good, very on theme, sporting a ‘grainy’ polish that greatly increases their charismatic aura.
