Dom Quincey Deals with Grief and Personal Turmoil in ‘Through the Door’

Words and music become powerful cathartic tools for Dom Quincey as he grapples with loss, grief, and the pains of finding a way forward. ‘Through the Door’ is melancholically sublime.

The keen reader will gladly remember British troubadour Dom Quincey, a talented artist we previously celebrated as having “gentle vocals, able to shift from intimacy to epicness in just a few notes”. At the time, we were writing about ‘It’s Not the End’, a record that introduced us to the project’s bittersweet, evocative pop allure, often drenched in cinematic flair and melancholic lyricism. ‘Through the Door’ marks Quincey’s comeback single, an introspective and meaningful effort that picks up exactly where the previous release left off.

Still struggling with grief and trying to process painful feelings, the British artist uses his lovable, tender songwriting as a cathartic tool, seeking to slowly change perspective over a particularly heavy loss. ‘Through the Door’ matches the mood with its crepuscular, sombre production, here focused on a gentle guitar and a sea of textures, the perfect match for Quincey’s nuanced, detailed vocals. Eventually, the piece explodes into a heartfelt and cinematic ending, a fitting climax for such a brooding offering.

Remembering the moments that shaped the song, Quincey explains: It was a really difficult song for me to write and record. It continues the story of loss which I started on my last single, ‘It’s Not the End…’, but from a more raw perspective. It’s about losing someone suddenly and being left with so much unfinished business. There’s a specific kind of yearning that comes from that. I wrote it from a place of bargaining where you’d do anything for them to just come back, even though you know they won’t.”
