Following up on last year’s single ‘Curtains’, Theo Black returns today with a striking display of his endless aural eclecticism, ‘Follow The Money’. Steeped in melancholic and prophetic storytelling, the track continues Black’s tradition of shifting genres at a moment’s notice, letting inspiration take him wherever it needs to. We love the seemingly gloomy and understated character of ‘Follow The Money’, a fictitious feeling that leaves space to a deeper sense of urgency and intensity.
It’s also quite a receptive and digestible record, in a way, one that has the potential to appeal to a wider audience. Theo’s vocals have now entered their darkwave phase, thanks to a profound tone and a casual, haunting delivery. As it’s often the case in Black’s creative process, ‘Follow The Money’ was salvaged from an old demo, originally written in a Las Vegas hotel room. With Sin City as a thematic background, the Miami-based songwriter was able to explore the universal role played by money in modern society, especially relevant today due to the ever-growing inequality.
As Black explains: “This song is about how money as a motivating factor stratifies us into people who will disregard others’ wellbeing to hoard more and those of us forced to sell our time, minds, and bodies for just enough to keep going. Definitely something that weighs heavily on the minds of small musicians as we try to get our ART heard in an industry that treats music like CONTENT and would quickly turn to AI if that means more money for the CEO’s.”
