Out today, ‘Better Way’ continues Michael Wu’s journey towards a forthcoming EP, ‘The Other Side’. Following up on previous single ‘Time25’, the new track unveils another piece of the puzzle, a complex and electrifying artistic picture steeped in nuanced lyricism and rock-leaning aural goodness. Standing beside his trusty Telecaster, Wu makes good use of indie and pop influences, crafting a record that’s bright and playful, potentially geared towards a wider audience. Michael’s vocals are exactly what the song needs, not too prominent but with good charisma to them.
At its core, and simplifying a fair bit, ‘The Other Side’ reflects on people’s inability to truly live in the moment. Whether they may be influenced by their past, their future, or by outside elements, it’s rather easy to get lost, especially in our chaotic, hyper world. Wu approaches the subject in stages, giving each of the EP’s four songs a precise meaning that speaks volumes about the eclectic and three-dimensional vision behind the project. Despite his long-standing experience as a musician, Michael is now showcasing his true artistic nature, a complete package that starts from philosophical abstraction and ends in satisfying melodism.
Hailing from Upstate New York, Wu mentions R.E.M., Johnny Marr, Beach Fossils, and early Death Cab for Cutie as his biggest influences. It makes sense: ‘Better Way’ feels quite slick and punchy, but also has a certain weight to it. If you are over 30, you are bound to be quite familiar with the sonic matter at hand. We certainly were. Stay tuned for ‘The Other Side’!
