For many, it’s the end of the year. For American songstress Space Memory Effect, it’s the start of a new artistic chapter. Teaming up with producer and musician Trevor Lewington, SME delivers ‘Blue’, an elegant, luscious and evocative piece steeped in indie-rock charisma and timeless allure. It’s the project’s first offering of the year, with Amy Wallace (as Space Memory Effect is known by day) emerging from an extended hiatus, one where she focused on writing new material. To be fair, Wallace’s 2024 has been incredibly busy, thanks to a whopping sixteen releases.
‘Blue’ tells us a few things; first, it provides evidence that Amy hasn’t lost her hypnotic flair just yet. Thanks to dreamy and introspective vocals, the talented creative manages to wrap listeners into a cathartic sonic universe, one that’s both tender and energetic. The record also engages in aural eclecticism, embracing an old-school indie-rock character drenched in pop tinges and soulful reminders. Whichever way you look at it, it’s a remarkable piece of music, one that speaks volumes about the heightened artistry of everyone involved.
Delving deeper into the song, Space Memory Effect explain: “The original spark for ‘Blue’ came from a situation at work that left me feeling dismissed and frustrated. Someone made me mad, and it bummed me out. Writing the chorus helped me process that moment. It wasn’t planned; I just sat down, and it came out. The song evolved over time, but that initial feeling is still in there.”
