We did tease ‘Preludes’ EP earlier this year, celebrating Cole Blouin as “a creative entity that approaches the musical medium from a vast multitude of angles, simply championing personal expression, wherever that might take him.” We stand by our words; the New York-based sonic artist, producer, and songwriter is rather elusive and enigmatic, exploring the aural continuum in search of fragments of audio that might pair well together. That’s how we get the project’s signature experimental material, all framed into ambient minimalism and chaotic expansiveness.
From the repetitive patterns and fuzzy darkness of ‘First Descent (Glimpse), the EP jumps straight to Abiogenesis (First Abyss), a piece that embraces a much more distorted and hard-hitting ethos, with gloomy and gritty cinematic textures showcasing the project’s eerie allure. ‘Seraphim Megalith’ continues on the same theme, showcasing a great deal of abstract textures and chaotic elegance. ‘Route 27 (Dream Fabric Abyss) takes the record to a close with a more measured and controlled drone, still steeped in darkness and creepy noises.
Delving deeper into ‘Preludes’, we are told: “These are tracks intended for club sound systems, to be played only a few dB beneath the threshold of pain.” Visceral and disorienting, the EP envisions a parallel world where modern anxieties collide with alternative escapism, sparking an edgy state of mind that might challenge listeners, yet reward them at the same time.
