Becca James Unveils Meaningful, Introspective Album ‘God in Chains, Vol. 1’

The keen reader might remember Becca James from a feature we published earlier this year, praising ‘God in Chains’ as a “grandiose, luscious piece that’s as intriguing and hypnotising as it is grounding and empowering”. We stand by our words, as we dive once again into the British songstress’s transformative artistry. Out today, timely released for the New Moon in Scorpio, ‘God in Chains, Vol. 1’ is James’ latest effort, a cohesive and meaningful album that collects a large series of singles released beforehand.

Apart from the record’s musical attributes, which are obviously beautiful and incredibly nuanced, the album offers a wider perspective on Becca’s personal, meaningful songwriting. Often steeped in cathartic introspection and spiritual healing, the project’s lyricism follows James as she deals with unresolved traumas and slowly rebuilds a fearless, healthy identity. ‘God in Chains’, Vol. 1’ is the direct result of that, a seven-track offering that speaks volumes about Becca James’ artistic integrity.

Mixed in both Dolby Atmos and Stereo, the record also shares a deep connection with moon phases. Delving deeper into the album, James explains: “God in Chains is a culmination of years of living, learning and writing about my experience of the cycles of healing, with the music an attempt to alchemise pain and trauma to pave the way for a compassionate new beginning. It has taken a village of collaborators from diverse backgrounds to create the music and the world around it, and I am extremely moved by the generous co-creation that made this possible. My greatest hope is that the record provides a place of strength and comfort to listeners.”

For anyone in the UK, Becca James is joining Matreya on his upcoming mini tour ‘From Darkness to Light: An Acoustic Journey of Rebirth’. Tickets here.
