Sparking a gloomy, obscure and gritty listening experience, Danish sonic explorer TRALALAS returns today with a large introspective album, ‘Ornament’. Writing about the project earlier this year, we celebrated ‘Winter on the Vine’ as “a quirky, sui generis record… that’s one of the best compliments we can give it, at a time when everybody is looking for trends and proven formulas.” We stand by our words: the Copenhagen-based project builds an aural universe that’s cathartic and haunting, effectively landing on a fringe brand of dark-pop with nostalgic influences.
Behind such a powerful project and album, we find Mortsen Alsinger, an experienced performer and songwriter with a fertile past in Denmark’s electro and punk underground. His rowdy and fearless youth does transpire in ‘Ornament’ as well, as the album mainly exists in its own space-time continuum, a cultural space that’s unique to TRALALAS. Out now via Aenaos Records, ‘Ornament’ features fellow talents Thomas Golsen (bass, guitar), Francis Nørgaard Jensen (drums), and Heidi Lindahl (vocals, backing vocals), with Thomas Li on production duties.
Delving deeper into the album, Alsinger explains: “‘Ornament’ is not a concept album as much as it is an experiment, an attempt to develop TRALALAS as a project looking forward. The tracks revolve around existential issues and the basic conditions of loss and gain. In a world caught in a negative spiral of consumerism and short-term thinking, I consider myself a melancholic and micro-ambitious artist who writes mostly about loss and gain.”
