We’ll start by being upfront and telling you all that ‘^]x*Ð’Ý{-’ is not an album for everyone. An experimental, boundary-pushing record, the EP explores the darkest corners of industrial electronica, the eeriest ambient and leftfield material out there. It’s partly brutalist, partly surrealist, partially horror-esque too. Not to mention a certain psychedelia making it all hypnotic and escapism-driven. Well, that’s why ‘^]x*Ð’Ý{-’ is not an album for everyone. Yet, it will appeal to the most bold, courageous listeners out there, the fearless folks, the ones operating on the fringe.
Like ourselves. We jumped into Nicolas Zappa’s otherworldly music with both feet. Hailing from London, UK, the talented creative and sonic alchemist champions a true DIY ethos, producing his records and sculpting every aspect of them down to the very last detail. It’s not a linear process, with Zappa making good use of unconventional tools, the likes of Soundthread, a sound design node-based interface previously used by Aphex Twin, among others.
Delving deeper into the EP, Zappa explains: “It’s got a great atmosphere, which corresponds well with the bleakness of our times. And also, it’s the work of one person (me), making everything without using AI. I think the whole EP should be listened to as a whole, but if you need 2 tracks to focus on, I would suggest ‘A?xi?ty’ and ‘Idiocracy’.”
