Following up on her previous effort ‘i made my bed’, rising popstar NORA has recently returned with another slice of deep authenticity and futuristic aural charge, ‘ugly cry on the dance floor’, a piece that reveals the project’s evolving identity and striking songwriting. Sparking a journey of renewal, and fully embracing her ‘angelcore’ aesthetic, the London-based icon leaves her previous alt-pop forays behind in favour of a niche and researched fring pop allure, a sonic direction that oscillates between hyperpop and electronica, yet never quite landing on a specific formula.
We suspect that’s the reason why ‘ugly cry on the dance floor’ feels so fresh and contemporary. Echoing the shattering force of fellow innovators Charli XCX and PinkPantheress (among others), NORA blends club-ready euphoria with deeper lyricism, threading the fine line between melancholia and escapism. In fact, the Norwegian talent experienced something very similar in real life, as the song was conceived after a night out that left her feeling “tired, lonely, and rejected”. Teaming up with producer Truls helped her convey such raw, sombre feelings within a more energetic framework.
As we are told: “‘ugly cry on the dance floor’ is a glossy hyperpop heartbreak track where vulnerability and delusion dance together under neon lights.” More music arriving in 2026; stay tuned!
