Chris Rusin Goes Beyond Nostalgia in Hypnotic Cut ‘Cinders’

Upon discovering ‘Cinders’, we were greatly surprised by the powerful dualism in it. Oscillating between country-leaning melancholia and folk-like tenderness, the single feels both nostalgic and heartwarming, a slice of charismatic lyrical goodness delivered on top of gentle acoustic guitars and orchestral textures. To note, ‘Cinders’ embraces a rather varied persona, introducing itself with heightened minimalism, then shifting into an almost cinematic gear, a feature that particularly comes to life in the track’s outro, incredibly expansive and ethereal.

The single is taken from Chris Rusin’s overarching album, ‘Songs From A Secret Room’, out now. On ‘Cinders’, Rusin teams up with talented songstress Katie Wise, here lending her glorious vocals to the cause. The balance between Rusin’s grave, deep tone and Wise’s cathartic, sombre voice works very well, making for a truly introspective and relatable lyrical output. Melodies are quite soulful and malleable, allowing the Americana duo space and time to deliver their hard-hitting storytelling.

As Chris Rusin explains: “Sometimes you need to look back in order to move forward. But if you dwell on the past too long, it can consume you. ‘Cinders’ is a song about trudging on when you can hardly bear to be there anymore because if you don’t move, then you’re just stuck.” The record also ships with a wonderful music video, a perfect visual companion to the underlying music.
