We approach ‘Fail We May’ with a certain reverence and respect. You see, the song emerges from a place of deep understanding and reflection, a meaningful ethos propped up by Dotts O’Connor’s evocative artistry and folk-like imagery. Hailing from Cavan, the Irish troubadour digs deeper into what it means to live life courageously and with purpose, shying away from any fear of failure and inner doubts. The song celebrates the act of committing to one’s role in life, truly delving into it despite all the challenges.
Also known as a member of Choice-nominated acts Come On Live Long and Dirty Dreamer, Dotts O’Connor was particularly inspired by watching a documentary about the late British DJ Andrew Weatherall: “I was late to the party in watching the brilliant documentary about Andrew Weatherall and his ‘Sail We Must’ encounter with a fisherman from Cork. I was blown away by the saying itself and was immediately drawn to creating situations where the saying could be applied, and I suppose that’s how the song unfolded.”
Apart from its meaningful inspiration, ‘Fail We May’ goes on to flourish on its own merits, with O’Connor’s expressive, malleable vocals delivering a tale of resilience and introspection. Tender, gentle acoustic guitars help the record reach heavenly heights, with further cinematic allure provided by a heartwarming piano and subtle textures. Eventually, the song explodes into an Irish-flavoured folk triumph.
