This one is for all modular synth enthusiasts out there. A complex, ethereal and abstract album, ‘H is for House’ sees Johan Antony and Henrik Johansson (aka Smyglyssna) teaming up for a collective journey into boundary-pushing electronica and brainiac IDM patterns. What results from such a potent collaboration is a stream of genre-defying, synthetic, and noisy pieces, all well-polished and with a certain futuristic allure. Going by the name of Pelican Company, the talented Swedish duo know exactly where they are headed; the goal is peculiarity and authenticity.
There’s a specific praise we want to give Pelican Company. Antony and Johansson don’t just produce a record for like-minded folks. They don’t get lost turning knobs and connecting modules on a synth. Instead, they do try to offer something for everyone. If the keen and cultured listeners will rejoice in titles such as ‘Werk The CV Utilities’, the casual observer will instead appreciate the meditative and minimalist nature of the piece, perhaps using it as a cathartic, escapism-driven tool against a gloomy reality.
Fast forward to ‘Red Wine & Cow Bothering’ and we notice Pelican House delving into bolder and louder electronica territories. This reinforces the eclectic identity of ‘H is for House’, while serving a surprising amount of breakbeat, funky-flavoured beats. It’s here that we can appreciate the contrast between Henrik’s dance-driven flair and Johan’s more technical, melodic artistry.
