Izira Burley Sparks a New Creative and Personal Era with ‘who i used to be’

Boasting a highly melancholic and intense character, ‘who i used to be’ is a rather personal and introspective effort. Written by American creative Izira Burley, the track introduces us to the young talent’s hard-hitting sonic universe, a blend of nostalgic alt-rock goodness and deep, meaningful lyricism. It’s a piece written with purpose, as Burley unfurls her past and her identity in search of change and new beginnings. Reckoning with growth and adulthood, Izira practices acceptance, knowing full well that letting go of the past is scary. Yet, it’s necessary.

‘who i used to be’ translates such a striking theme in aural terms, layering sharp, gritty guitars over rowdy drums and Evanescence-like gloomy pianos. There are lots of early ‘2000s alt-rock flavourings in it, a feature that will likely appeal to a lot of keen listeners out there. It certainly appealed to us! Produced by Quiet Son, the record also benefits from Burley’s luscious, elegant vocals, here delivered with icy restraint and understated decadence.

Delving deeper into the song’s ethos, Izira explains: “For me, change has always been scary. But change is inevitable, and it will happen. As a way to accept this, I wrote this song. This song is a letter to the old me. It’s how I was able to completely let go of the old me and welcome in the new Izira. Most importantly, learning how to forgive myself.”
