We wrote about Madeleine Rose Witney not long ago, celebrating ‘Shine’ as “showcasing Witney’s timeless class and unmatched elegance”, a statement that rings even truer today, as we welcome the project’s new single, ‘Struttin’, and its upcoming debut EP ‘From Now On’. An uplifting, vibrant and soulful cut, ‘Struttin’ sees Witney indulging in a groovier cut, with lively, gentle drums and a charming horn section accompanying Madeleine’s luscious, hypnotic vocals, once again oscillating between all-out epicness and moments of shared intimacy.
Based in London, Rose Witney is best known as a torch singer and Soho storyteller, descriptions that well fit her vintage, 60s-informed aesthetic. ‘Struttin’ perfectly matches such a striking ethos, even more when taking into account the lyrical side of it. Inspired by one of Rose’s former flatmates, a mod in his 60s who lived on “a diet of Jack Daniels and burned sausages”, the song is “a showstopping moment for a very individual character. He’s lived the same for 30 years, untouched by time, leaving toast crumbs in his wake. The track’s a bit of a jibe, but full of affection.”
‘From Now On’ Releases on November 13th via 5db.
