There’s a great deal of observant character in ‘Sweet Debauchery’. You see, the record makes no secret of being inspired by the failing reality around us. Reacting to our gloomy, chaotic times, Swedish electro-pop outfit The Connecting Dots deliver an album that’s haunting, hypnotic and intriguing, enchanting listeners with a flurry of vibrant synths and fuzzy guitars, all underlining the evocative vocals of Stockholm-based songstress Helena Sundström.
Introduced by ‘Modern Shapes’, the album sets the theme from the very first note. In fact, we find it quite retro at times, especially in this track. Arpeggiated synths and slick beats morph the sonic panorama in a quirky blend between Depeche Mode and Abba – that’s certainly a compliment! Perhaps that’s the general silver lining in ‘Sweed Debauchery’: no matter how dark and alternative the production gets, Sundström’s bright and catchy vocals keep it friendly and relatable. Of course, the lyrical theme maintains its deep, meaningful flair.
As The Connecting Dots explain: “It’s a harsh social climate, and that affects us all. Right now, more than ever, it feels like the world is heading in the wrong direction, with environmental destruction, war, and general despair. Writing silly love songs in that context feels almost impossible. The songs on this new album are still poetic, as always, but there’s a depth and seriousness we’ve gotten closer to the more we’ve written.”
