Super Creeps Unleash Gritty, Roaring EP ‘Certified Cardboard’

We appreciate Super Creeps’ approachable, simple ethos. Refraining from penning concept albums or drawing from painful memories, the American band goes straight to the point, simply writing music that sounds good to them. But here lies the trick: what sounds good to them is incredibly unique and witty post-rock/grunge goodness, all delivered with gritty garage energy and electrifying distortions. In short, Super Creeps are not borrowing from anything in particular, instead creating something that’s wholesome and uniquely theirs.

‘Certified Cardboard’ is the perfect example of that. As the project’s latest EP, it features four hard-hitting and oblique pieces. It opens with ‘House of Pain’, a liquid and cinematic guitar-driven effort that feels decadent, rowdy, yet poised and controlled. Hypnotic and psychedelic, it provides a striking window into Super Creep’s apparent simplicity. As one would expect, such a song would then explode into a full-on finale. ‘A Bug’s Life’ is perhaps more conventional, as is ‘Accomplice to Murder’.

‘Extended Adolescence’ gets given the sped-up treatment, and as such, it sounds truly lo-fi and noisy. Delving deeper into the EP, Super Creeps explains: “This EP wasn’t overthought. It’s just us back in the studio, making music and having fun. We’ve got a lot more coming.” Told you.
