HalfCutLemon Return with Expansive, Fierce Album ‘This Ain’t Real’

We approach HalfCutLemon with a certain reverence. Hailing from Copenhagen, the gritty post-punk outfit has all the marks of an underground phenomenon, a group of talented and committed rockers with a thousand stories to tell, and a thousand gigs spent in small, gloomy venues and hidden basements. Their sound matches such an impression with a bold, fierce sonic imprint freely oscillating between punk exuberance and decadent melancholia.

The Danish talents have recently released their second album to date, ‘This Ain’t Real’, out now via AENAOS Records. In it, keen listeners will be able to rejoice with everything that HalfCutLemon has to offer. From all-out anthems such as ‘Ointment’ and ‘Up’, to the post-rock obliqueness of ‘La Revolution’ and the gloomy ‘Fist’, passing through gentler efforts such as ‘The Sun Is Dying’. It’s a roller-coaster of an album, one that you can visit time and time again.

Yet, doesn’t that mirror life itself? We live in a complicated, polarised society, and most of us are certainly feeling the constant push-and-pull between despair and hope. We’d argue that ‘This Ain’t Real’ takes the cue from that principle, then expanding it in sonic form. It makes sense, HalfCutLemon like to reflect, and they don’t certainly seem to be content following the beaten path. Their music and their lyricism always push further, unveiling a world of artistic goodness that’s there for the taking.
