NOREA Debuts with Slick DIY Cut ‘Submarines’

A talented drummer, Swedish creative NOREA is now channelling her inner Karen Carpenter, letting go of the sticks and grabbing a microphone. The result of such bold artistry and personal growth is a slick, catchy and playful new wave/indie piece, a relatable and eclectic offering drenched in a wholesome DIY ethos and bedroom pop quality. Titled ‘Submarines’, the single sees NOREA debuting with her solo project, after a few years drumming for bands such as Junodef, Del III, and The Garage Flowers.

From a sonic standpoint, ‘Submarines’ is exactly how we would expect a fiercely independent project to sound. Delving into playful, minimal, and melodic indie flair, the track features an uplifting, exuberant drum groove that supports an evocative layer of textures, shimmering guitars, and angelic harmonies. The chorus carries a hint of melancholy and nostalgia, together with veiled cinematic energy. Yet, echoes of the British new wave movements are louder than anything else, with NOREA comparing the song to the likes of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’.

Delving deeper into the record, the Malmö-based artist explains: “Submarines was written quickly, but then hidden deep in a drawer – it felt like a sentimental guitar ballad from someone who had just discovered chords. Years later, I brought it back, tried a range of different arrangements, and eventually landed in a more upbeat version that finally felt right.”
