Following up from previous single ‘Burning Bridges’, London-based creative Liya Shapiro has now unveiled her latest effort, ‘Hold Me Tight’, a bold and honest dive into tumultuous attraction and romantic vulnerability, all framed into a part decadent, part roaring pop-rock livery. Having explored Shapiro’s catalogue a fair bit, it’s become obvious that the project champions a certain eclecticism, especially on a sonic level. Oscillating between guitar-driven rock elements, dreamy textures, and pop elegance, Liya appears to be carving out an artistic path that’s uniquely hers.
Not many artists can say that. Some are drawn to mimicry, perhaps striving to belong to a particular scene or niche. ‘Hold Me Tight’ does exactly the opposite of that. Despite its wider references, the single feels peculiar and free, borrowing from pop elegance as much as it does from rock charisma. Shapiro’s vocals are always up to the task; if in the verses they sound intimate and gloomy, the chorus introduces an explosive, anthemic ethos, a triumph of catchy melodies and relatable lyricism.
Originally written seven years ago, ‘Hold Me Tight’ is deeply inspired by a “summer of unrequited love”, an emotionally chaotic period stuck between connection and loneliness. Yet, the song wasn’t completed, with Shapiro writing its chorus only last year in a quick burst of sudden inspiration. Perhaps it was meant to be; the moment had come for ‘Hold Me Tight’ to be shared with the world.
