Blues Corner Honour the Great Blues Tradition in ‘Piggy Bank Blues’

Not all records need to be groundbreaking or experimental. Some just need to draw from tradition and deliver a wholesome, wonderful fragment of musical goodness. That’s exactly what Blues Corner set out to do. The duo’s name is rather self-explanatory: the union of experienced musicians Phil Roman and Seb Oroval, the project seeks to delve into blues, rock and country with the utmost respect for the greats; theirs is almost a tribute, a way to pay homage to the (partly) lost art of playing the blues.

‘Piggy Bank Blues’ is the strongest evidence of that. In it, we find the two French musicians doing what they do best, unveiling a highly authentic blues aura that’s a joy to listen to. Feathery drums, poised and elegant guitars, and a playfully saloon-esque piano. Yet, no worries; the guitar solos do blink an eye to icons such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others. Overall, the record delivers a wonderful listening experience, one that will appeal to any nostalgic blues aficionados out there.

Curiously, ‘Piggy Bank Blues’ is taken from Blues Corner’s upcoming album, which also features a more Country-oriented section, proof that Roman and Oroval don’t just fixate on one genre. They also rallied around them a team of like-minded creatives, including Fred Chapellier, a pillar of French blues; Marco Cinelli (The Cinelli Brothers); Sonny Landreth; and Stéphane Filey, with production by Bruno Dandrimont.
