A bold, niche offering, ‘kalimba’ won’t likely be a record for everyone. Yet, the keen and courageous listener will rejoice in the boundary-pushing ethos behind the piece. You see, ‘kalimba’ emerges from the fertile creative mind of American sonic alchemist bgumrazr. He’s quite adamant about his developing nature, meaning he’s learning how to make better music day by day. That said, the project’s foundational ethos is what matters the most; blending dark ambient and fringe hip-hop in one cohesive album.
‘kalimba’ is taken from that very same record, ‘The Noir Moon’, bgumrazr’s debut effort. In it, we find a wealth of avant-garde textures and hip-hop fragments, resulting in a listening experience that’s unlike anything we have come across before. It’s also challenging, questioning our deepest beliefs and unfurling some of our sonic expectations. ‘kalimba’ is the strongest evidence of that, an expansive, escapism-driven atmospheric tune packed with hip-hop coded allure.
As bgumrazr eloquently explains: “‘kalimba’ was built by sampling and manipulating the sounds of my own kalimba finger piano. That track represents the album’s spirit, taking something intimate and organic, then warping it into something haunting and unfamiliar. I draw heavily from ambient, noise, and industrial influences, weaving them into a mythology of decay, isolation, and identity.”
