Soft Hearted Scientists Share Kaleidoscopic Effort ‘Wonder Girl’

We should approach ‘Wonder Girl’ from a wide angle, as does the talented and creative band behind it. Championing an all-encompassing number of influences, Cardiff-based Soft Hearted Scientists drives an artistic flair that’s rich and quirky, often pompous and wrapped in traditional, nostalgic roots. On the surface, ‘Wonder Girl’ sounds quite power-poppy, yet there’s something incredibly elegant and luscious in it, all qualities partly aided by lead singer Nathan’s evocative, playful vocal tone.

From a sonic standpoint, the single also carries a distinct hypnotic flair, giving way to a not-so-hidden psychedelic imprint, especially obvious in the production, from time to time. So what’s ‘Wonder Girl’? Can we even pinpoint it to a specific genre? Maybe. Honestly, it’s easy-listening, pop-oriented material, but overall highly informed by soulful, Motown-esque formulas and nostalgic psych-rock tropes. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no denying that’s the product of an imaginative, bold group of musicians, not afraid to express themselves through music.

Soft Hearted Scientists are adamant about what the single stands for: “A lovestruck song featuring half an album’s worth of hooks, Motown and surf guitars, celestial humming choirs, a sudden mood change middle section, and the whole thing bounces off the walls with energy. The Wonder Girl in question may be real, an ideal, a ghost from an old photograph, or she might just be a product of wishful thinking.”
