Ivy Hollivana Fuses Melancholia and Futurism in ‘Wastewater Doll’

Self-describing her output as ‘digital pastoral pop’, Ivy Hollivana can be seen as a bold underground innovator, a keen and eclectic figure part of a group of young creatives pursuing genre-less goodness, drawing from tradition yet embracing a striking futuristic look. Championing a fierce DIY ethos, Hollivanna hails from Vancouver with a global outlook. Navigating playful Y2K influences, potent hyper-pop lushness and rave-oriented EDM material, Ivy’s music character is rather hard to predict, yet it never disappoints.

‘Wastewater Doll’ is the perfect evidence of it. Introduced by Hollivana’s ethereal, spacious vocals, the record then develops on a diverse palette of EDM and D&B beats, a quality that makes the track both nostalgic and forward-thinking. The contrast between folk-coded, evocative vocals and the electrifying production well mirrors the song’s lyrical urgency, steeped in melancholic romantic imagery and dooming theming.

Written after watching the movie Suzhou River on Discord in March 2021, ‘Wastewater Doll’ also carries a great deal of personal relevance for the talented songstress, signalling the beginning of a new era in her life. As Hollivana explains: “It’s intensely digital and the sound encompasses the world I lived in at the time. The lyrics exist in an air of sadness… (spoilers about Suzhou River) it is about two lovers dying in a river together. Romance and death have always been present in my work, and I love to couple that with production that makes you want to dance.”

Ivy Hollivana is also gearing up for a forthcoming album, ‘Heaven Camera’, out on all platforms on October 9th.
