We have written extensively about Michigan hypnotic duo Powers of the Monk. Championing a striking blend of folk, rock, and a touch of psychedelia, the American project oscillates between ethereal, floating atmospheres and harsher guitar tones, making for an aural formula that’s forward-thinking, yet always familiar. ‘Bread & Circuses’ is Powers of the Monk’s latest effort, a dazzling and cathartic fever-dream delivering an elegant and otherworldly listening experience.
Lyrically rich and imaginative, the single touches upon a Schizofrenia patient, indulging in a delusion of breaking out of the facility and visiting a circus. Perhaps witnessing the lions eat the clowns… It’s a rather morbid theme, quite quirky and fringe, yet it’s rolled out very well by Powers of the Monk, and if one were not to pay attention to the songwriting, ‘Bread & Circuses’ would just sound like a dreamy effort with a slightly hypnotising twist.
Once we focus on the song, such a character becomes gloomier, darker, tinged with the obstacles of mental illness and the pitfalls of the human mind. As always, David S. Monk and CasSondra ‘Pontiac’ Powers do a great job on the record, showcasing their musical alchemy and artistic affinity. The song also features guest drummer John O’Reilly Jr.
