Writing about Olivia Reid back in January, we found ourselves praising the concept of ‘stillness’. Aiding a heightened sense of calm, and looking to “lower my heart rate”, the NYC-based singer-songwriter and producer found her way to a wealth of stripped-back, acoustic-driven material, leaning into alt and indie folk with a certain eclecticism and soothing character. If single ‘All in Time’ caught our eyes earlier this year, ‘Space to Roam’ promises to double down on all the great qualities Reid had to offer.
A stunningly elegant and ethereal EP, ‘Space to Roam’ was written during an artistic residency in Burdag, rural Poland. Such idyllic and secluded settings serve as the perfect inspiration for Olivia, taking a step back from electronic-influenced material and finding a worthy refuge in simpler and more immediate acoustic goodness. Yet, there are still tons of depth and nuances in the record; it’s not just guitar and vocals, with gentle and minimal textures helping the EP reach wholesome territories, perfectly supporting Reid’s hypnotic vocal harmonies.
Overall, ‘Space to Roam’ deserves to be enjoyed in quietness, fully grasping its evocative and nostalgic lyricism. As Reid explains, “I wrote these songs because I needed them and needed to hear them. I didn’t want to overthink them or overedit them. They are just simple, soft songs for the soul.”
