There’s a high degree of cultural contamination in ‘BADALNI WA7EED’. Fusing Western and Arabic culture into an eclectic, melancholic and evocative piece, the record seeks to push forward with a cathartic, varied formula, the perfect match for the rising creative behind it. Born in Dubai to an Iraqi father and a Palestinian mother, Josef has long walked the fine line between the West and the East.
Experiencing life between Europe and the Middle East, the talented singer-songwriter has been able to develop an inherently personal, unique style, a feature now plenty evident in ‘BADALNI WA7EED’. From a sonic standpoint, the single delves into bittersweet and nostalgic indie-pop, with a rather alternative twist to it all. A flurry of cinematic textures helps the track reach higher territories, while Josef’s English and Arabic lyricism slowly frames the listeners into an introspective and cathartic experience.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the song, Josef explains: “There are times when I have to really think about what I’m saying in my lyrics and making sure that I’m talking about something meaningful, but not this time. The words felt like they were straight from my soul; something about being in a town like Bath in the dead of night was so inspiring. I have the moment I wrote the song on video, there’s an energy to it.”
