It’s not our first rodeo with Swiss musician and composer Alex Wellkers. In fact, we first encountered him last year, celebrating the album ‘Fly Away’ as championing “a sense of grandeur and sophistication that permeates throughout the record, all leading to a truly cinematic experience”. We stand by our words; one of Wellkers’ unique features is his ability to draw orchestral instruments (such as strings and harps) in pop and rock-flavoured territories.
Well, Alex has now returned with another stunning showcase of musical elegance, unveiling his latest full-length effort, ‘reach the stars’. Packing thirteen eclectic pieces, the album feels expansive and cinematic, yet still maintains a certain intensity and electrifying liveness. Hailing from Zurich, the talented troubadour enlisted the help of mixer Stephan Steiner and mastering engineer Dan Suter to help bring his creative vision to life.
It works: overall, ‘reach the stars’ provides a roller-coaster-esque listening experience, pairing gentle, soothing tones with fuzzy guitar distortions and roaring drums. Wellkers’ towering vocals instantly capture the listeners’ attention. Delving deeper into the record, Alex explains: “It contains dramatic rock and pop songs with plenty of classical instruments like strings and harps combined with a rocky voice, piano and guitar tracks.”
