‘Crimson Desire’ marks our point of entry into Re:O’s unique sonic universe, a place where Japanese culture and aesthetics are greatly infused with metal and hard-hitting musical flavourings. Driven by singer and creative Rio Suyama, the group has long oscillated between gloomy synths and distorted guitars, unleashing a sound that’s eclectic, poignant and rather cinematic. ‘Crimson Desire’ appears to instead embrace a punchier metal and alt-rock livery.
In fact, the piece hits the listeners hard, a slice of explosive guitar-powered charisma that’s hard to resist. Intense and electrifying, the record moves with epic flair and resonant melodies, letting Suyama’s potent, towering vocals wrap listeners into a dystopian tale of unmet desires and personal ambition. James Wright, James ‘J’ Stevens, Jon Roberts, and Alex Carli complete the band’s talented lineup, penning a larger-than-life effort that’s in full display in ‘Crimson Desire’.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the song, Suyama explains: “It explores the realisation that what you have is not enough, even though you sacrificed most of your life to get where you are. The more you gain, the more it fuels an unending hunger to further advance your goals and ambitions.”
