Echomatica Debuts with Melancholic Cut ‘Love Isn’t Always’

As August came along last week, a new band rose from the ashes of a distant past: Echomatica. ‘Love Isn’t Always’ is the record that introduces us and the world to them. The immediate feeling is of a hazy, hypnotic and ghostly creative outfit, a band oscillating between trip-hop, shoegaze, electronica and dream pop. In fact, their overall aesthetic is quite kaleidoscopic and cathartic, a character that well fits their melancholic, feverish sonic energy.

Hailing from New Zealand, the talented group borrows from a wide pool of influences, ranging from retro figures such as Joy Division to contemporary icons, the likes of M83, among others. Yet, there is a feeling that there’s much more in it, as ‘Love Isn’t Always’ eloquently showcases. It’s a simple record, in a way, but also truly hard-hitting and memorable. The listening experience is decadent, introspective, aiding escapism while sparking reflection. You won’t forget such a potent piece anytime soon.

Delving deeper into ‘Love Isn’t Always’, Echomatica explains: “It’s a song about the quiet unravelling of something once beautiful. We wanted to try to express the kind of emotional truth you don’t see in the movies—the kind that tests you, changes you, and sometimes breaks you.” Echomatica’s upcoming debut album is expected in October, via Dead Signal Records.
