BŠĀR Returns with Stunning Synthpop Gem ‘Venus’

On the surface, ‘Venus’ might appear as your run-of-the-mill synthpop record. Yet, at a deeper look, the piece benefits from understated elegance and luscious, perfect melodies, something that indicates the heightened compositional skills of its author. Hailing from Canterbury, BŠĀR is the talented creative behind the single; a producer and multi-instrumentalist, he’s also classically trained, a feature that explains the great deal of musical playfulness found in ‘Venus’.

Known as Ben Royston by day, BŠĀR manages to pen a song that’s deep and nuanced in both its lyrical and sonic realms. You see, from a production standpoint, ‘Venus’ feels nostalgic and retro-flavoured, yet it doesn’t sound like a tribute or outdated, it’s still contemporary and fresh, quite electrifying too. Lyrically, the piece is meaningful and committed to deeper storytelling, using common imagery to convey a wider message about the vulnerability and fragility of human vanity.

As BŠĀR eloquently explains: “It encapsulates narratives of both a romance on the rocks and a plea to the mythical deity, Venus, goddess of love, beauty and prosperity. A comment on modern human frailty: the fear of rejection, of ageing, of being cast aside and no longer relevant in a world where physical youthfulness and discernibility are deemed as paramount to being accepted.”
