Ha Vay Returns with Hypnotic Fever Dream ‘Spellbound’

Some of you might know Ha Vay as ‘angeldreamgirl777’ – as her Instagram handle playfully suggests – and honestly, it’s a description that well fits the American songstress’s hazy, feverish aural ethos. A fierce explorer of evocative dream-pop, retro psychedelia and gentle folk tones, Ha Vay has built an impressive brand for herself, rallying a committed, dedicated audience that has gained her millions of streams on Spotify alone and a recent sold out, debut North American tour.

The sky is the limit, not just because a purple-tinged, cloudy sky would fit the project really well, but also because Ha Vay continues to release the most wonderful, soothing and hypnotic records you could ever imagine. ‘Spellbound’ is the perfect example of that. Following up on previous effort ‘Blush’, the new single takes the project into poppier, digestible territories, thanks to a nostalgic and cathartic sonic panorama and Vay’s atmospheric, heavenly vocals.

There’s a touch of melancholia in it, something that makes the track even harder-hitting and relatable. Delving into the inspiration behind her songwriting, Ha Vay explains: “‘Spellbound’ cleverly walks a line of ambiguity. Is it an easy summer song out of a 2000s witchy rom-com? Is it a tongue-in-cheek reference to the singer’s reputation as a siren? Whatever the origin, the track is an unexpected blend of glittery Y2K singer-songwriter pop and Ha Vay’s trademark esoteric nature: a confident pop anthem for the strange girls.”
