LunaRover Delve into Personal Experience with ‘Fountains’

I return to writing after some tough days. Nothing mysterious, just life getting complicated. LunaRover are the ones welcoming me back in my music discovery mode. Hailing from Silver Spring, US, the group has delivered a single that’s partly bright, partly melancholic. ‘Fountains’. It’s quite bittersweet; at times it comes across as a neutral record; a groove-driven nugget of joy with playful, rhythmic motifs and genius sound design. Don’t discount it at that; before you know it, ‘Fountains’ returns to more evocative territories, especially in the chorus. It’s a dualism that works well in the song.

Behind the record, we find duo Kevin Rieth and Ben Pelletier, the creative minds behind LunaRover. Overall, I’d classify their latest output as a ‘measured’ release. You see, the track doesn’t seek to impress; it doesn’t seek to take us on an emotional rollercoaster. Instead, it is steeped in real-life experiences and honest work, keeping the energy stable and the lyricism relatable. It makes sense when confronted with what Kevin Rieth has had to go through after a painful breakup. You see, there’s sadness and nostalgia in it, but there’s also hope, and the realisation that things might be alright, after all.

As LunaRover explain: “This song captures the process of personal growth and rebuilding following a painful breakup, inspired by a real event in singer Kevin Rieth’s life. Through work on oneself (and a little bit of medication), the singer is able to rebuild and prepare for a new relationship. This allows him to give all of himself to his new partner.” The sonic panorama focuses on light indie-pop references, allowing LunaRover’s vocals to tower over the single with elegance and charisma.
