Last time we featured Moira Chicilo, it was a little less than a year ago. Writing about ‘Someday Got Away’, we proudly declared it as “a deeply personal song about the realisation of running out of time.” At the time, it was obvious how Chicilo’s songwriting was deeply personal and inspired, a reflection of her wonderfully nuanced artistry. Now, the Canadian songstress returns with another slice of aural goodness, ‘Poets & the Misfits’.
This time around, she looks outward, paying homage to the visionary breaking force of artists as a whole. Celebrating the restless search for pure, unfiltered artistic expression, Moira seeks to highlight the committed and sometimes hard process that one has to go through in order to craft a valuable piece of art. Perhaps Moira is also looking a tad inward, as she’s rather used to penning wonderful records. She might know something about it, eh!
From a sonic standpoint, ‘Poets & the Misfits’ benefits from Chicilo’s acoustic ethos, with a cathartic acoustic guitar providing the foundational structure for the Vancouver-based creative’s soothing vocals. Delving deeper into the single, Chicilo explains: “A love letter to all the artists who continue to bravely speak the truth in the hope to encourage humanity, justice, and social change.”
