Alex Cherney and The Brothers Nylon Get Ready for Summer with ‘Pool Party’

Sparking a nostalgic, uplifting sonic journey, ‘Pool Party’ feels incredibly vibrant and carefree, all drenched in luscious disco influences and an overall eclectic flair. Penned by American creative Alex Cherney and his band The Brothers Nylon, the album is not a reflective, introspective record; it’s exactly the opposite. Expansive, bright and feel-good, ‘Pool Party’ transports the listeners into a fictional… pool party, one that’s steeped in 70s extravaganza and 80s imagery.

From an aural standpoint, such a long and kaleidoscopic collection of musical goodness benefits from being recorded on a Tascam 388, something that gives it a decisively warm analogue tone. Coupled with the mostly impromptu recording process, it makes for an old-school LP, yet one that doesn’t feel derivative or obvious; there’s still plenty of creative inspiration and authentic energy in it. What we love about it is the balance between sonic modernism and historically accurate arrangements, with joyful string sections and funky guitars finding their striking place in the mix.

‘Pool Party’ is genius from a lyrical perspective as well, with the album narrating a fictional pool party in its various phases. As Alex Cherney explains: “I had the idea to make it a concept album – following a fictional pool party from the start of the party to finish – and having it genuinely feel like a party with a mixed bag of vocals on the album, seamlessly flowing like a DJ set. Pop, soul, rap, foreign language, pool party has a little vocal for everyone and remains grounded in a continuous disco groove (though varied in composition).” A rotating cast of talented vocalists completes the aural picture.
